Each and everyday, life presents me with opportunities to learn and grow; this holds true in the process of creating works in clay. I am on a path that continues to unfold with each piece of work I create. It's a never-ending journey that is a practice of observation, assessment, problem solving and a commitment to self-discovery.

In the latest passage of my clay life I am taking a new approach to creating with clay. I have started hand-building sculptural clay chairs. Each chair is individual and has its own persona, exhibiting human qualities of imperfection, vulnerability and at the same time constancy.

Everyday we co-exist with these simple objects that we think nothing about. Since I have slowed my building method down, I've had the time consider the chair and that represents safety, and refuge. Combining these attributes with the uniqueness of each chair reflects characteristics of my life and the people I interact with.

I coil construct the chairs out of red earthenware clay that has a lot of sand in the body. This allows me to create the scratched and flawed surfaces. The ladder back chairs range in height up to 28 inches tall and the stuffed chairs can weigh as much as 30 pounds. They are fired multiple times with under glazes and raw oxides and fired in temperatures up to 2000 degrees.
